Family Migration

Family visas to bring loved ones together again

The family class of visas brings immediate and extended family members together with eligible Australian relatives. They are among the most important visa applications of Australia’s migration program.

Your visa options

Partner visas

These visas are available to people who are married, in a de facto relationship or in a same sex relationship with an Australian partner. The application can be made in or outside Australia.

Prospective marriage visa

This is available to people outside Australia who intend to marry their Australian sponsoring partner after they enter Australia. This visa is not available for people in Australia.

Child visa

For children not included in the application of their parents but who migrate separately. They must be sponsored by a parent or relative, or that person’s cohabiting partner.

Parent visa

For parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, who are ‘settled’ at the time the application is lodged. They must also satisfy the balance of family test. They are usually sponsored by their child, but can also be sponsored by their child’s partner. If the child is under the age of 18, certain other people are able to sponsor the applicant.
